The UN Population Fund and Purim African Youth Development Platform, an NGO, have deliberated on ways to initiate and sustain a project that will end child marriage and empower other vulnerable groups.
The pilot-based project is targeting market centres within the Ashanti, Bono and Greater Accra Regions with the focus on female Head Porters, popularly called Kayayei.
Executive Director of PAYDP, Aku Xornam Kevi, explained that the project will equip Kayayei between the ages of 10 and 19 to make informed decisions, improve their economic status and reduce vulnerability to gender-based violence.
