Parliament defers approval of second batch of Deputy Minister nominees

Parliament begins debate on State of Nation Address

Parliament of Ghana.

The Minority in Parliament has compelled the House to defer the approval of the second batch of Deputy Minister nominees who have already gone through vetting.

The development is in response to the controversy over the Appointment Committee’s report on a Deputy Minister-designate for Education Gifty Twum Ampofo.

The Committee, though, has recommended her approval, the bone of contention is that the Minority wanted the report to reflect that she was being approved by majority decision instead of consensus as captured in the Committee’s report.

The Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu informed the House that MP for Tamale North Alhassan Suhiyini is in opposition to the approval of Gifty Twum Ampofo and expressed reservations over the Committee presenting the report as an approval by consensus.

A Member of the Appointments Committee and Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh says he was not surprised at the conduct of the Minority.

Meanwhile, a suggestion by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin for the two sides to confer, based on a plea by the Majority was not heeded to by the opposition caucus resulting in the deferment of the adoption of the motion.
