Exactly 1:40 p.m. on the 24th of July, 2012, a sitting president, the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, died at the 37 Military Hospital.
Ten years later, at the exact time of his death, the National Democratic Congress, in collaboration with the family and the John Evans Atta Mills (JEAM) Memorial Heritage, would organize a wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of the death of the late president.
This was announced at a news conference in Accra.
Before being elected to the high office of president, the late president J. E. A. Mills served in different capacities in public service.
Apart from having been a vice president, the former university lecturer was, at one time, Commissioner of the then Internal Revenue Service. The first president of Ghana to die while in office will continue to be remembered for his humility and love for peace and unity.
Since his passing, Atta Mills’ family and the National Democratic Congress, NDC, party have initiated different activities and programmes to honour his memory.
As part of the 10th anniversary of his death, the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage is organizing lectures across the country to highlight the late former president’s unique qualities and contributions to the country.
Already, two of the countrywide activities have taken place in Tamale and Cape Coast.
Between now and the 24th of July, there would be a call on the Chief Imam and Muslim prayers to would be held at different mosques for the soul of the late president.
The State of the Nation Addresses delivered by him, addresses he made at the United Nations General Assembly, and all regional lectures highlighting his unique attributes and legacies would be compiled into books for posterity.
The wreath-laying ceremony would be organized at exactly 1:40 p.m. – the time and day of the passing.
