Two people have died of meningitis in the Nandom Municipality of the Upper West Region. The municipality recorded six cases out of which two have died.
The Lawra Municipality also in the region has recorded three suspected cases.
This came to light during a meeting of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council in Wa.
The 1992 constitution mandates the Council to meet at least twice a year. The meeting discussed pertinent issues including security, health, agriculture, education and roads.
The Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih said though the region is now calm after the recent killings of private security men, security has been beefed up in the region at the borders.
He however expressed worry on the number of chieftaincy disputes which have not been resolved by the Regional House of Chief.
All the ten municipal and district chief executives in the region took turns to brief the house on development issues in the region.
The MCE for Nandom disclosed that the Municipality has recorded cases of meningitis.
Explaining the current situation of meningitis in the region, the Wa Municipal Director of Health, Dr Alex Bapula who spoke on behalf of the Regional Director Dr Demian Punguyiri confirmed that two people have so died of the disease while samples of suspected cases are being tested.
The meeting was attended by all the MDCEs and Municipal and District Coordinating Directors, Presiding Members, Members of the Regional Security Council and traditional authorities.
