The Greater Accra member of the Council of State, Hon E.T. Mensah has bemoaned the state at which the teaching and learning of the Ga/Dangme language is dwindling in our schools in the Greater Accra Region and said it has negative effects on the culture build-up of the future generations.

He said this when the Regional Director, GBC Accra, in charge of Obonu TV and Obonu FM, Mrs. Loretta Vanderpuye paid a courtesy call on him at Tema.

The member of the Council of State, however, congratulated Obonu FM for introducing programs that promote the Ga Dangme language and culture.

In her remarks, the Regional Director, GBC Accra, in charge of Obonu TV and Obonu FM, Mrs. Loretta Vanderpuye said all programs and events undertaken by Obonu FM and TV are geared toward promoting Ga Dangme language and culture.

Mrs. Loretta Vanderpuye outlining some of the programs and progresses made since she assumed office in 2016, said apart from the annual Obonu kenkey party that the station organises to promote more interest in the eating of the Ga kenkey, the station is also introducing a new program which is ”Obonu Fm essay competition”.

Elaborating on the maiden Obonu essay competition, the GBC Obonu Director explained that the maiden essay competition introduced by GBC Obonu FM seeks to whip up interest in the study of Ga Dangme language among students and the general public.

She said the maiden edition targets Senior High Students. Mrs. Vanderpuye said the winners of the essay competition will be awarded great prizes such as cash, laptops, stationery and many other prizes for the participants.

The Greater Accra member of the Council of State lauded the initiative and said the study of the language has been rolled back but his passion is to get it back.
