In the vast sub-Saharan region of Africa, where over 600 million people lack access to electricity, solar energy presents a beacon of hope. With abundant sunshine and a growing demand for reliable power, solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is poised to revolutionize the lives of millions. Off-grid solar solutions, in particular, are transforming rural communities by providing clean, affordable, and sustainable electricity.
Sub-Saharan Africa receives an average of 2,500-3,500 hours of sunshine per year, making it an ideal location for solar PV installations. This abundant sunlight can be harnessed to generate electricity that can power homes, businesses, and essential services.
The lack of or limited access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa has a significant impact on people’s lives. It limits access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. It also contributes to environmental problems, as people resort to burning wood and charcoal for cooking and lighting.
With this insight Start.Up Lounge Africa (SLA), a management consulting firm with offices in Ghana and Germany launched its maiden SLA Solar Open Day in collaboration with the Enterprise Village. On December 14, 2023, the company brought together stakeholders and major distributors in the solar sector in Ghana to witness an exhibition of new and transformational solar off-grid systems.
Equipment exhibited included a battery storage unit called the Esperanto produced in Germany, foldable solar panels, solar-powered water pumps, fridges, and TV sets, to mention a few. SLA will be representing its supplier Bourgeois Global, a Subsidiary of Solipac based in the South of France, in Ghana to supply solar equipment to distributors, businesses, and individual buyers.
In an opening speech, the Chief Executive Officer and Partnering Founder, Samuel Boakye Opoku said partnering with the European Union as company is one that will go along way to help them provide communities and businesses with an environmental friendly energy products at affordable rates.
“As a company, we believe that bridging the gap between the African continent and the EU is a no-brainer. This is why our work with Bourgeois Global is very crucial. With a strong partner like Bourgeois Global, we will be able to provide communities and businesses without or with a limited supply of electricity with high-quality climate-friendly, and sustainable options. It is clear to me that renewable energy is the future of energy supply especially in Africa and I am happy we can contribute to this future with our partners and stakeholders. We hope to work closely with strong partners like the Enterprise Village, development corporations and major distributors to power businesses and communities across Africa.”
