MOYS to sanction parties involved in para-athletes visa scandal in Norway https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/sport/para-athletes/2024/ https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/sport/para-athletes/2024/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 23 Jul 2024 15:23:03 +0000 https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/?p=327461 The Ministry of Youth and Sports says they are actively investigating issues surrounding the disappearance of some para-athletes in Norway.

This comes after reports surfaced online that 11 para-athletes and officials who travelled to Norway for the Fjordfrakf Bergen City Marathon in April had failed to register and absconded.

This resulted in the death of the team’s coach, Mr. George Gyamfi Gyasi, who passed away on May 17, 2024, following his admission to Oslo University Hospital.

In a statement, the Youth and Sports Ministry stated that “National Security had notified them of the situation and outlined the concerns involved.

“In the Norwegian incident, the Ministry of Youth and Sports did not receive any communication from the National Sports Authority or the National Paralympic Committee on the said competition and therefore was unaware of the participation of the Paralympic team in the marathon.

“We wish to state that we are actively working with the relevant authorities to investigate the matter to ascertain the issues surrounding the incident.

“Necessary sanctions would be brought to bear on all parties found culpable in the matter.

“It is important to note that while this incident is unfortunate, it does not define the dedication and integrity of the entire sports fraternity.

“Our athletes and officials have consistently showcased remarkable discipline and commitment to sporting excellence, bringing pride and joy to our nation at several international competitions,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the National Paralympic Committee has suspended two officials Mr. Theodore Mawuli Viwotor, former secretary of the Ghana Paralympic Football Association, and Mr. Yaw Ayisi, founder of the Ernestay Foundation, for their roles in the incident.

PARIS 2024: Team Ghana participates in IOC Sports manipulation workshop https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/news/paris-2024-team-ghana-participates-in-ioc-sports-manipulation-workshop/2024/ https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/news/paris-2024-team-ghana-participates-in-ioc-sports-manipulation-workshop/2024/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 19 Jul 2024 10:21:46 +0000 https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/?p=327059 By: Michael Okuley

Ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is emphasizing the prevention of competition manipulation through its “Believe in Sport” campaign. This initiative aims to educate athletes, their entourages, and officials about the risks and rules associated with competition manipulation.

Team Ghana athletes and officials on Wednesday July 18, 2024 participated in the workshop to understand the rules against  sports manipulation.

The campaign included a series of webinars, educational materials, and online courses designed to help athletes understand the implications of manipulating competitions for financial, sporting, or other advantages.

This educational effort is supported by six athlete ambassadors who will engage with their peers and promote the campaign’s message both online and in person at the Athlete365 House in the Olympic Village during the Games.

Additionally, the IOC has established various measures and systems to protect the integrity of competitions.

These include the Olympic Movement Unit on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions, which provides model rules, an awareness-raising campaign, and an intelligence system.

The Integrity Betting Intelligence System (IBIS) facilitates information exchange between the Olympic Movement and betting entities to detect and prevent manipulation.

Parliamentarians edge Black Stars Legends in exhibition match https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/sport/parliamentarians-black-stars/2024/ https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/sport/parliamentarians-black-stars/2024/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 19 Jul 2024 07:55:55 +0000 https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/?p=327052 Ghanaian Parliamentarians demonstrated their football skills, defeating former Black Stars players 3-1 in an exhibition match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

The match, which served as a curtain-raiser to the Hearts-Kotoko Democracy Cup match, was filled with excitement from both teams as they celebrated Ghana’s 30-year parliamentary democracy.

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South Constituency, captained his colleagues while former Black Stars Captain Stephen ‘Tornado’ Appiah led his entourage of Ghanaian football legends.

It was largely entertaining at the start, with the likes of C.K. Akunnor, Augustine Arhinful, Sam Johnson, and John Painstil showcasing their skills to the fans at the stadium.

But the former Black Stars players were caught unaware after the Parliamentarians took the lead in the first half.

Some Parliamentarians, including Mr. Yussif Issaka Jajah, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North Constituency, and Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaso were in cruise control of the midfield area dominating play.

At the start of the second half, the Black Stars Legends made some changes with the introduction of Sulley Muntari, Laryea Kingston, Ibrahim Tanko, Agyemang Badu, and Derek Boateng as they searched for the equaliser.

Sulley Muntari scored for the Black Stars legend to level the game halfway through the second half.

But the Parliamentarians scored two quick goals to dent any hopes of a comeback by the former Black Stars players and subsequently emerged winners after regulation time.

After the match, there was an exchange of pleasantries between the two sides with the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin joining them on the pitch for a photo session.
